Tennis: Williams' Roddick, Federer Out American Venus Williams' hopes of defending her Olympic tennis title were ended by Mary Pierce as she served up a shock defeat in the third round. The unseeded Pierce wrapped up a comfortable 6-4 6-4 victory over the world number 12 in the Athens heat. Williams, who is already out of the doubles competition, could find no answer to the determined Pierce. The 29-year-old's victory means the United States will not be represented in the women's singles in Greece. American 16th seed Chanda Rubin also fell to a French opponent as she was defeated by second seed Amelie Mauresmo. Mauresmo saw off Rubin 6-3 6-1 and now plays Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarter-finals. The fifth seed advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Switzerland's Patty Schnyder. Australia's Alicia Molik also ended American Lisa Raymond's challenge with an efficient 6-4 6-4 victory. Chile's Fernando Gonzalez dumped second seed Andy Roddick out of the Olympic tennis tournament in the third round. The world number 20, who had only won once of their three previous encounters, took just one hour and 12 minutes to seal a 6-4 6-4 victory. Roddick looked off form in Athens and failed to convert four break points in the decisive game of the match. Meanwhile, The Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych caused the upset of the men's singles tennis competition after he beat world number one Roger Federer in three sets. The Wimbledon champion lost 6-4 5-7 5-7 to the unseeded 18-year-old in the second round match on Tuesday. Berdych, ranked 74th in the world, will now play Spain's 15th seed Tommy Robredo in the next round. Berdych was ecstatic after his victory.
