Book on Computer Skills Acquisition Launched in Lagos
By Ben Nwabuwe

A new book aimed at enhancing the acquisition of computer and IT skills without necessarily having a teacher has been launched in Lagos. The book, 'Computer Skills at a Glance', is described by its author, Augustine Omilo, as a teach-yourself-computer book for first -time computer users and experienced ones alike.

Omilo said each chapter of the book could be studied independently, enumerating the various chapters and their contents, which include, courses such as word processing, Internet, computer based accounting, computer maintenance, repairs and assembling. "Other chapters touch on programming, general computing, computer related interview questions and suggested answers", Omilo explained.

Omilo said the book project had taken him three years of consistent research and investigation from various organisation including schools.

He debunked the notion that computer is contributing to joblessness in the country, adding that rather it creates more jobs. He said it simplified job, which was why America was recording a lower number of unemployed persons than Nigeria was.

Omilo said his next publication would address the problems of computer engineering and programming. It would be based on his experience gained from training people in the banking industries and computer Institutes.

Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Emeka Mgbeahuru, Marketing/Sales Director PZ Industries PLC, commended the author's, effort to improve computer knowledge of Nigerians.

Mgbeahuru, said computer knowledge was important for e-marketing, "it helps to pass information from producers to customer and I believed that as many that didn't have the opportunity to go to computer institute will have reason to smile with this book".

In his review of the book, Mr. Desmond Irabor, explained that the author who had been in the computer business for the past 15 years had been able to arrange the chapters in such a way that the lay man can read and understand computer without stress.

He explained that the book started with the origin of computer, what computer is all about, types, usage, and the use and importance of the Internet.
