UK Gamers Rush to Snap Up Doom 3

The eagerly anticipated Doom 3 has proved a runaway hit with UK gamers.

The sci-fi horror title has shot straight to the top of the UK games charts, becoming the first PC-only title to go to number one this year.

In Doom 3, gamers take on the role of a marine on a Martian base, facing a horde of nasties released from hell by scientific experiments.

The other big new entry was the film tie-in, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, at number five.

Doom 3 is one of the big releases of the year and it was widely expected to sell well.

There was a great deal of expectation surrounding the game. The original 1994 Doom is credited with introducing 3D graphics, making gaming a much more realistic experience.

It drew gamers into a three-dimensional virtual world where they had to battle monsters and helped to establish the concept of the first-person shooter.

This latest instalment has been four years in the making and is estimated to have cost around $15m (8.3m).

The game knocked Spider-Man 2 down to number two, after five weeks at top of the UK charts,[ published by the games industry body, Elspa.

According to some reports, Doom 3 has become the fifth fastest selling PC game of all time in the UK, based on figures to date.

The other big new release of the week was the critically acclaimed Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

The game for Microsoft's Xbox debuted in the charts at number five.

Doom 3 has been widely praised for its atmospheric graphics and sound, though some reviewers have criticised it for its linear game-play.

Concerns about the extreme violence in video games do not seem to have harmed sales.

Last week, publishers Activision defended the game, saying it had a rating of 18 and was suitable for an adult audience.

Developers id Software are working on a version of game for the Xbox.

But it is unclear whether the Xbox version will go on sale this year, or early next.
