President Olusegun Obasanjo who is also the Chairman of the
African Union,has reaffirmed that
the Union would continue to be at the forefront of every efforts aimed at resolving
the crisis that has ravaged Sudan in recent months.
The president who received a delegation of
the Sudanese government led by its Foreign Minister, Dr Mustafa Osman on
Tuesday was optimistic that the Sudanese stakeholders meeting scheduled for
next week in Abuja would lead to remarkable progress in the crave for a lasting
peace in the country.
Obasanjo who also spoke on plans to disarm
warring factions said, “Dealing with the issue of disarmament will help
the process. After disarmament and demobilisation, we must think of
reintegrating the rebels and various militia back into the civil
society.”
He, however, observed that a political
solution must be sought for the crisis, even as he urged the Sudanese
government to wake up to the challenges of entrenching peace despite reports by
the Sudanese foreign ministry suggesting improved security situation in the
Darfur region of the country.
The Sudanese Foreign Minister assured that
the government of Sudan would welcome any contribution by the AU towards the
resolution of the lingering crisis.
Obasanjostressed that economic problems are not peculiar to any one country.
