Corpses from Okija shrine to be sent abroad for test

By kingsley Omonobi & Ndidi Onuora
Friday, August 20, 2004

ABUJA— SOME DNA tests to be carried out on the corpses recovered from the Okija shrines by the police aftermath of the visit of the  Inspector-general of police, Tafa Balogun are to be performed abroad, police sources disclosed to Vanguard yesterday. The  disclosure came just as it emerged that the police have uncovered four threat letters sent to Mr. Chukwumezie Obed Igwe, the  petitioner in the case warning that he would not go unpunished and promising to kill him for the exposition and disgrace his action  has caused the Okija deities.

Consequently, it was revealed that the Inspector-general has directed the Lagos State police commissioner; Israel Ajao to beef  up security around the house or property of the petitioner to ensure nothing happens to him while investigation is still on.

According to the source, “some of the corpses were discovered to have been as old as 25 years and to be able to determine the  cause of death especially since it is their skeletons that are remaining, will need some new sophisticated equipment that are not  available in the country right now. Asked to comment on the sex of the corpses, whether they are male female or children, the  source said that would be revealed by the DNA tests but that from an interim point of view and from their position in the coffins,  they are mostly men.

Disclosing that a lot of the tests would be conducted in country, the source said, “from the look of things, it is going to be a very tough job.  What we saw at Okija was unbelievable. For us to get to the route of the matter without controversy, there will be need to do  some of the tests abroad.
