From Jaiyeola Andrews in Asaba
Six months after the death of former national Vice-Chairman of the peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South, Chief Aminoisari Dikibo four suspects arrested in connection with the killing will be charged for murder and not for an armed robbery offence.
In the wake of Dikibo's killing, President Olusegun Obasanjo in his comment had alleged that armed robbers may have killed the PDP stalwarts, a statement which drew the Ire of the family of the slained politician and many Nigerians, as they condemned Obasanjo's statement as too hasty.
At yesterday's press briefing in Asaba, Delta State Attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Amos Utuama averred tha the four suspects arrested would be charged to court for murder and not armed robbery.
"We are seeking consent of the High Court in Ogwashi-Uku to try the four suspects for murder" the justice commisioner stated noting that the suspects were earlier arraigned in a magistrate court at Ogwashi-Uku, Utuama pointed out that the magistrate court had no jurisdiction to try a case of such magnitude.
"We came to the conclusion that these are not offences the magistrate court has jurishiction to try" he averred.
According to the justice commissioner, because of the high profile of the case, a committee was set up to examine the police file, with a view to doing a thorough job.
It would be recalled that late Dikibo was gunned down at Ishiagu near Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State, on February 6, while on his way to attend the meeting of party leaders from South-South.
A fact-finding panel was set up by the presidency to find out circumstances surrounding the killing of Dikibo, and at one of its sitting in Asaba, Dikibo's family lawyer, Chief Chuks Muoma alleged threat to his light through telephone calls on his mobile handset.
