We Won't Support Power Shift to North-Group
From Agaju Madugba in Kaduna

The northern states chapter of the South -South People's Conference (SSOPEC) has said it would not support the on-going campaign for power shift to the north in 2007.

Alleging marginalisation and oppression of the south-south people by northern leaders, the group asserted in a statement in Kaduna yesterday that, "any group that is against our survival will never have our endorsement".

In the statement signed by the chairman, Dr Kalada Dick Iruenabere, and secretary-general, Mr. Richard Bassey Duke, the group demanded the convocation of a national conference describing it as the best forum to determine the fate and direction for the nation.

The group based its pronouncement on the principle of the on-shore/off shore dichotomy debate, arguing that, "the north is seeking to take away the little advantage or concession which they and other majority tribes have allowed us".

The statement read in part, "the north and its allies do not seek anything that will advance the cause of one Nigeria, rather, they seek to re-launch Nigeria on the path of total disintegration.

"As good students of history, we have not forgotten that when groundnut, rubber, cocoa, coal, palm produce etc were the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, the principle of derivation was accorded 50 per cent resource allocation.

"As these resources diminished and oil emerged as Nigeria's major resource, derivation as a principle of revenue allocation was gradually eroded to zero point ostensibly because of the civil war.

"More than 34 years after the civil war ended on a no victor-no-vanquished note, the people of the south are being treated as a conquered people.
