FG Plans Maritime Security Agency From Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja Federal Government plans to set up a special joint security outfit in all the nation's seaports. Speaking to THISDAY yesterday, Mr. F. U. Osamor, spokesman of the Ministry of Transport, said government's decision on the matter was conveyed by the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS), Col. Kayode Are at a stakeholders awareness forum on the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code in Warri. Are, according to Osamor, said the proposed joint security arrangement which would include the Police, Navy, Nigeria Ports Authority, Nigerian Maritime Academy and Nigerian Shipper's Council, was intended to "put an end to rivalries among core government agencies in the maritime sector". Providing adequate security for Nigeria's sea ports in accordance with the requirements of the ISPS code had led Federal Government to set up of a special compliance committee known as Presidential Implementation Committee on Maritime Safety and Security (PISCOMSS). The committee under the chairmanship of the Minister of Transport, Dr. Abie Sekibo, recently embarked on the installation of security and safety facilities at the ports including major oil terminals in the deep offshore area. Osamor said PICOMSS is also working on domesticating all relevant international maritime laws, treaties and conventions through a collaborative effort with the executive and legislative arms of government.
