Bayelsa Wants Navy to Man Coastal Areas From John Iwori in Bayelsa Bayelsa State government has again appealed to the Nigerian Navy to man all strategic coastal areas of the state by closely monitoring the activities of sea pirates and other anti-social activities on the waterways. The state Deputy Governor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, made the appeal when the Flag Officer Commanding of Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdul Ganiyu Adekeye, paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Yenagoa. Describing the state as largely maritime, Jonathan, who noted that Bayelsa State needs the presence of the navy, called for the establishment of a naval base in the state. He gave an assurance that the state government would give all the necessary logistic supports for the take-off of such a naval base. The deputy governor, who disclosed that major oil and gas installations are to be sited in the state, called on the navy to help play a critical role in ensuring the safety of the site. Earlier in his remarks, Adekeye stated that his team was in the state to visit strategic oil installations in his area of command to forestall any security breach as well as safeguard all oil installations. Adekeye disclosed that there had been an earlier outcry on security threats particularly around major oil installations. This, according to him, gave the navy certain responsibilities in ensuring the safety of facilities located along the coastal lines. The naval officer pledged his support for the establishment of a naval base at Egwema to complement the state government's efforts and foster rapid economic growth and development of the state. The naval boss solicited for the state government's assistance for the take off of the naval base in the state.
