Deputy Gov Condemns Overdependence on Oil

Osun State Deputy Governor, Erelu Olusola Obada, yesterday condemned the nation's over-dependence of the successive government in the oil sector, saying this has militated against the growth of the nation.
Addressing participants at the conference organised by the Cocoa Association of Nigeria (CAN) held at Osun Presidential Hotel, Osogbo, Obada stated that all Nigerians should rise up to the challenges by shifting into agriculture production so as to move the nation forward.
According to her, "it is more important now to start look for alternative way of generating funds essentially in the field of agriculture instead of puting effort only on oil sector."
Obada, who is also the chairman, sub-committee on National Committee on Development of Cocoa (NCDC), noted that "we must begin to accord more priority on cocoa production in order to boost the revenue generation for the government."
She added that "the memmory of the contributions of cocoa on the socio-economic development of our people in the not-too-distant past continues to stare on our face with one and only clear indication that cocoa can enhance the economic futures of the nation."
While appealing to the stakeholders in cocoa development to evolve a strategy in having functional and acceptable cocoa statistics, the deputy governor stressed that this would assist then to plan and deliver good services to the populace.
Obada however declared that the present government in the state was doing its best of ensuring agricultural development by providing tractors, cocoa seedlings among others to the farmers in the state at cheaper cost.
Earlier, National Cordinator, Improvement of Cocoa Marketing and Trade Project, Dr. P. K. Attah, noted that the cocoa sector needed an organisation that would systematically collect, synthesise and publish data at regular intervals.
