NEMA Donates Relief Materials to Disaster Victims

Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Dr. Chris Ekpenyong, has said the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated relief materials worth millions of naira to disaster victims in the state.
He made this disclosure in Uyo while distributing some of the items, noting that the relief materials, which include 300 bags of rice, 300 bags of beans, 500 bundles of zinc, mattresses, bags of beverages and cements among others, would not be donated to communities involved in communal wars but only to those affected by natural disasters.
The deputy dovernor stressed that the state government's policy of not donating relief materials to warring communities was still subsisting, stressing that the policy was aimed at discouraging communal crises in the state.
He thanked President Olusegun Obasanjo and NEMA Director General, Alhaji Bashir Maikarfi, for their sensitivity to the needs of disaster victims in the state and pledged to ensure judicious and equitable distribution of the materials to communities and persons that badly need them.
Meanwhile, the materials have been donated to 73 communities and persons affected by natural disasters ranging from wind storm to fire disaster.
The deputy governor listed such communities to include Atan Ntukuk and Anor in Abak Local Government area, Afaha Udo Eyop, Ikot Akpa Ndua and Nung Ukana Ikot Efre all in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government area as well as Ikot Iwud and Nung Esu in Nsit Ibom local Government area which were affected by wind storm and flood.
Other disaster-affected communities that benefited from the donation include Ikot Ukana, Ikot Ukpong, Ikot Otu Nto Edino and Nsit Ikpe Obot Akara Local Government area.
Some destitute homes such as the Children's Home at Ikot Ekpene, the Motherless Children's Home in Uyo and the Widow's Mite Centre at Abak Local Government area also benefited from the donation.
In a related development, the state government is to rehabilitate two schools that were recently affected by wind storm. The schools are Leroto Girls Juniorate, Abak and Etinan Institute, Etianan.
The Deputy Governor, Dr. Chris Ekpenyong who made the announcement today in uyo while distributing relief materials to disaster victims said the mattresses donated to the state by NEMA would be given to the two schools to ameliorate the suffering of students of the two schools.
