5000 Benefit from Free Medical Treatment By Shaka Momodu Over 5000 patients have so far been treated free of charge by the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) just as the group promised to return as soon as adequate arrangements are made. Of the patients treated so far in Badagry 850 had eye surgery 400 had surgery for fibroid, hernia, appendicitis, and Goitre. Speaking during his visit Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu, noted that the continued denial of the state its due hampered effective service delivery adding that the cow that provides the milk is being denied nutrition. Tinubu said Nigeria will continue to bemoan the vast brain drain if our social infrastructure were not maintained. Tinubu said with appropriate improvement in infrastructure compared to what exists in developed countries, Nigeria can tap the vast reservoir of expertise of her citizens. While urging companies to pay the taxes levied by the state government rather than using legal means to avoid them, Tinubu said continued refusal will deny Nigerians and the less-privileged opportunity for self actualisation. He further called on the Federal Government to create a level-playing ground for all citizens to have access to qualitative healthcare. Counting the gains of the free medical treatment, the governor noted that operations that range between N10,000.00 and N200,000.00 are being undertaken free of charge. He said while many had shunned the hospitals prior to the exercise, the free services had encouraged them to step out for treatment. Tinubu who also said it was impossible to quantify the exercise, noted that aside from the consumables brought by the doctors, the man-hour involved was extensive.
