Cross River Customs Area Command in charge of Cross River, Calabar Free Trade Zone (CFTZ) and Akwa Ibom State has over-shot its target in revenue generation by netting N1.5 billion in seven months.
Also in its effort to regulate the import and export of sub-standard goods and banned items into the country in line with Federal Government policy, the command has announced the seizure of 820 cartons of frozen chicken valued at N3 million.
Disclosing this to newsmen in a press briefing, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the Command, Comptroller Jerry Alagbaoso, said due to the efficiency and effectiveness of his command, they have made tremendous revenue to Federal Government.
According to him, the command N367 million in the first quarter and N830 million in the second quarter while N299 million was raked in only in July.
Alagbaoso stated that his men are very capable to fight the unwholesome practices and techniques of smugglers, adding that the 820 cartons of perishable frozen chicken in a 911 lorry with registration number IMO XA 305 GUA was apprehended at Ikang in Cross River State.
"Let me use this opportunity once more to warn all those smugglers who seem to have refused to 'walk the way of the new Customs administration' that the comptroller-general of Customs and indeed the Nigeria Customs is now more than ever prepared to reduce smuggling to its barest minimum," he stated.
he enjoined press to join hands with the Nigeria Customs to educate the Nigerian public on the danagers of the economic cankerworm of smuggling, especially on the health implications of frozen chicken and turkey treated with unknown chemicals.
To ensure that the seized perishable items did not get back to the market, the 820 cartons were buried to the full glare of the Press, Police and NAFDAC officials who certified the items unsafe for human consumption.
