Health Workers May Embark on Strike

Activities at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital may be paralysed soonest as workers of the Federal Government-owned hospital are restive over non-payment of arrears of salaries and allowances.
THISDAY checks at the teaching hospital indicated that the strike which ought to have commenced in previous day, was shelved because of the hospital's management last minute efforts to avert the industrial crisis by rallying the leadership of the various industrial unions in the hospital to a round-table dialogue.
In a letter of notification to commence the strike to the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Sulaiman Kuranga and dated August 13, the union threatened to resume the suspended strike if by this week their demands are not met.
The workers' demands included the full payment of their June and July salaries, payment of 13 months arrears of 22 per cent on HATISS 1V, payment of three months arrears on 12.5 per cent and payment of all outstanding check off dues to date.
When THISDAY visited the hospital at 12.45pm on Wednesday, the management of the hospital led by the hospital's chief executive was holding a "crucial meeting" with representatives of industrial unions in the hospital at the conference room.
Some staff who spoke to THISDAY on the proposed strike condemned the federal government for alleged non-release of "enough funds" to the management of the hospital to run it.
However, tension has gripped relatives of patients at the hospital over the proposed strike as some of them were seen making frantic efforts to effect the discharge of their loved ones to private hospitals in the state.
Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Alhaji Oba Hassan Kadiri was reported to be attending to a programme at the maternity wing of the hospital when called.
