FG Urged to Restore Export Grant
Sokoto
From Ahmed Oyerinde in Sokoto
An appeal has gone to the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, restore the Export Expansion Grant (EEG) it suspended sometime ago.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Cement Company of Northern Nigeria (CCNN), Engineer Ibrahim Gobir, made the appeal recently at the pre-AGM dinner held for the company's stakeholders at Giginya Hotel, Sokoto.
Gobir, who stated that the CCNN was the only cement manufacturing plant that exports clinker and cement officially through a formal note, noted that the restoration of the EEG would encourage the firm to continue with the export.
He argued that even though the grant was suspended because of the activities of some "unscrupulous Nigerians," Federal Government needed to revisit the issue as a way of enhancing the economic growth of this country.
The chief executive told the shareholders that the company started exporting clinker to Maibaza Cement Plant located in the Republic of Niger since 2001, adding that it was the success recorded in this regard that made the company go into cement export in 2003.
Gobir, who is also the Sardauna of Gobir, added that so far the company has exported 26,093.69 tonnes of clinker and cement to Niger Republic.
He lamented that the company had to discontinue its test export to the Republic of Chad because of the suspension of the grant by Federal Government.
The Managing Director further stated that due to the scarcity of fuel called LPFO, the company since 2003 have been using rice husk as alternative fuel for kiln burning.
He said with use of rice husk as alternative fuel, the company is saving about 21 litres of fuel oil per tonne of clinker saying "this is certainly a big saving for the company."
His words "we are currently working towards expanding the capacity of the plant but to do this, we need more money and I am sure our shareholders will not disappoint us."
