S/Africans Wait on Frantz, Cloete, Others
From Emeka Enechi and Pius Ayinor in Athens

With great expectations in the Track and Field competition hitting roof tops, a new week seems to have beckoned for South Africans at the Athens Olympics. Those who are carrying the nation's burden in this regard include Sydney Olympics bronze medallist Kruger Frantz, Atlanta '96 silver medallist Sepeng Hezekiel, Commonwealth bronze medallist Mulaudzi Mbulaeni, Cloete Hestrie among other promising athletes.

Cloete has remained a shinning star in the long jump event and hopes to cap an enduring and blistering career with a gold medal in Athens. She won silver medal at the Sydney games but has remained world's number one in different world championships including Golden League and World Champion-ship. She became the first South African athlete to win an Olympic high jump medal since Esther Brandt's gold in 1952. Cloete hopes to win the event's gold medal as she plans to retire in 2004. She had predicted quitting the game after winning the event in Edmonton Canada during the World Championships. 'After 2004, I am going to stop doing athletics. So, this is going to be my last Olympics and the last time you will see me. I am trying to keep my husband happy and maybe there is the possibility of a baby' she had said. She is a sure bet for a medal.

Kruger Frantz is another South African athlete who is in a world of his own. Whenever he is on stage, the tiger in him charges and roars to excellence. Kruger had over the years, combined academics with athletics and is rated among the best Discus Throwers across the globe. However, he later quit his studies at the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg in order to concentrate fully on his game. He reasoned that since he was the world's number two as a part time athlete, he could as well be world's number one as a full time participant. He won the bronze medal at the Sydney games but aims to better that performance this weekend. No, doubt, South Africa will smile home with either the gold or silver from the event. However, that depends seriously on his mood and level of concentration.
