Part of the re-structuring in the ministry of culture and tourism involves re-shuffling the parastatals and proper coordination of tourism education with National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism(NIHOTOUR) taking centre-stage.
NIHOTOUR will be moving from Baguada near Kano to Abuja. and other campuses to reflect the six geo-political zones of the country.
There are five campuses of Benin, Bauchi, Enugu, Lagos and the headquarters will be in Abuja for the North Central.
Tourism Minister Ambassador Franklin Ogbuewu said that the re-structuring "is important for the ambition of improved service delivery".
While performing the handover ceremony recently, transferring catering schools that were affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism to government-owned NIHOTOUR, Ogbuewu said that the re-structuring is important in order to prepare the future leaders of a rapidly evolving tourism industry.
He said: "NIHOTOUR as apex tourism training institute has not fully discharged its responsibilities due to lack of focus and vision of administrations in the past. That is the reason why non-professionals form the bulk of the workforce in the service industry in the tourism sector in the country."
Ogbuewu who described the management of NIHOTOUR as dynamic and resourceful, explained that the shortage of skilled and trained manpower in the tourism sector will be improved to enable the tourism industry contribute its quota to the economy.
He pointed out that the re-structuring also called for the need to review the staff strength of NIHOTOUR so that only competent and professionally qualified staff are retained.
First of its kind in the West African sub-region, NIHOTOUR is set up to cope with the needs of the industry at various levels in the field of hospitality and tourism studies. The institute is anchored on a United Nations Development Programme ( UNDP) as a result of the growing needs for an upgraded professional training to prepare students for International Air Transport Association (IATA) and UFTAA.
NIHOTOUR has the mandate to ensure travel agents, hotel and tour operators among others in the sub-region pass through quality training.
