Taylor deserves no mercy Ex-ECOMOG chief, Shagaya

    EMMA OGU, Owerri

FORMER ECOMOG field commander Maj-Gen. John Shagaya (rtd) has insisted that he is opposed to the asylum granted former Liberian president, Mr. Charles Taylor, by Nigeria, because of the latters war-time atrocities on Nigerians.

Speaking with Daily Champion, Gen. Shagaya said Taylor "lined up" two Nigerian journalists, Tayo Awotunsin of Champion Newspapers and Krees Imodibie of The Guardian "who knew next to nothing about the Liberian crisis and slaughtered them."

Besides Gen. Shagaya said, Taylor fought with unmatched ferocity against Nigerian troops, who were merely in Liberia as an interventionist force and were not party to the crisis in that country.

According to him, Taylor "killed more than one quarter of a battalion" such troops stationed in Ebanga, pointing out that such was "criminal" in view of a ceasefire in place, which, he claimed, Taylor was a co-signatory.

Taylor, the former Internal Affairs Minister added, "never ever respected" protocols for peace in his country, including Protocols One, Two and the Yamoussoukro, Cote dIvoire Protocol.

"With that kind of character and having been part of the negotiation and discussion...but he never respected it," Shagaya said.

Dwelling on opponents of former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) who is back in public glare and even seeking high office, Shagaya said such development does not worry the former ruler.

IBB, he said, has forgiven them, adding that most of them would have reacted differently if certain conditions were on ground.
