Falcons seek semi-final ticket, play Germany

    HUMPHREY NJOKU

SUPER Falcons of Nigeria will today face Germany in the quarter-final of the female football event of Athens 2004 Olympics.

Call it the battle of David and Goliath and that would capture the duel between the world champions and the African queen billed for the Pampeloponnisiako Stadium.

With 10 goals and none against in two matches, the Germans are favoured to overcome the African champions.

Boasting the tournaments best attack and defence together with top scorer and reigning World footballer of the Year, Birgit Prinz (five goals), the Germans appear head and shoulders above the Super Falcons.

Falcons qualified for the quarter-final from Group E after beating Japan 1-0 and losing 2-1 to Sweden. New sensation Vera Okolo and former African Footballer of the Year, USA-based Mercy Akide scored for the Falcons.

Both teams had never met each other at the Olympics, they last met at the FIFA Womens World Cup in 1991, where the Germans triumphed 4-0.

In the run-in to this years Olympics, the Germans beat the Nigerians.

These statistics may end up in the history book as the determined coach Ismaila Mabo-tutored girls have vowed to shut down the Germans.

Precious Dede, who has lifted her game to a first class position, will be in goal, while kid dynamite Vera Okolo, Mercy Akide and Perpetua Nkwocha, are expected to get the goals that will see Falcons book a semi-finals ticket.

The winner of this match will meet the winner of the USA - Japan match on August 23.

Todays referee Indonesian Bentla Dcoth, with Chinese Hongjuan Liu and Japanese Shiho Ayuakai as assistants. The fourth official is Romanian Cristina Lonescu.
