    12 Okija priests wanted- IGP

    MALACHY UZENDU, Abuja

TWELVE priests of the Okija shrines in Anambra State are being trailed by police.

They are wanted for failing to turn themselves in to the authorities even as 13 others who did, were arrested for questioning.

The revelation came as fresh from Wednesdays fact-finding trip to the shrines in Ihiala council area of the state Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mr. Tafa Balogun, went to brief President Olusegun Obasanjo on the incident.

The President was reportedly shocked that several public functionaries had patronised the shrines.

Also reportedly made available to the President were the registers of clients to the Ogwugwu shrines as well as a list of those whose deaths may have been linked to the place.

With the additional arrest of 13 Ogwugwu priests, the police now have in their custody 43 suspects being questioned over the killings in the Okija shrines.

Force headquarters, Mr. Chris Olakpe, said "all the corpses so far recovered would be subjected to full forensic analysis."

"The IGP is out to rout out all barbaric and unacceptable traditional practices in all parts of the country," he added.

On the statement credited to Mr. Balogun on investigation into such shrines in other parts of the country, Mr. Olakpe said investigators would be empaneled to take care of that.

He warned that those who kill people on any pretences must be punished, asking the public to make available to the police, information that help them perform their duties.
