Again, Kano postpones election in three councils

CITING insecurity, the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has again postponed the election in Madobi, Kiru and Kabo councils.
According to KANSIEC chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Durbunde, the security situation in the three councils is not conducive for the election scheduled to hold today.
Durbunde yesterday declared the postponement of the election, citing the powers conferred on him by section 46 sub-section 1 of the state electoral laws.
The immediate past governor of the state and now Minister for Defence, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwanso, hails from Madobi Council. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Sign that trouble may erupt became glaring when former deputy governor of the state, Dr. Umar Ganduje, stormed the KANSIEC secretariat with supporters of the opposition PDP to register the party's misgivings with the conduct of KANSIEC, which revolves round a last minute change of the list of polling officials at the electoral body's secretariat.
Supporters of the PDP demanded a reversal of the list to the status quo and threatened to burn down KANSIEC secretariat if their demand is not heeded.
One of the supporters, Idi Mohammed, alleged that the change of the list of polling officials was a ploy by the ruling All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) to rig the council polls.
Of the 44 councils in the state, ANPP won 36 while PDP won six during the last March council poll. The remaining three, Madobi, Kiru and Kabo were postponed due to security reasons.
Governor Ibrahim Shekarau defended the decision to shift the poll in the affected councils, saying it was due to the fact that Kwankwaso is keen on winning his council forcefully through the use of soldiers from Abuja.
The decision to shift the poll followed a security meeting between the governor and security chiefs, which lasted several hours.`
