Abuja to import 100,000 tones of fertiliser, says official

TO ensure sufficient fertiliser in the next cropping season, the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has concluded plans to import 100,000 tonnes of the commodity, according to the Agriculture Secretary, Mallam Adamu Waziri.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja, Waziri said the importation would be done in collaboration with fertiliser suppliers.

This, he added, was aimed at satisfying the farming and irrigation requirements of the FCT farmers during the cropping season.

He stated that one of the reasons for the collaboration was that only eight metric tonnes of the commodity were secured for the FCT farmers during this cropping season.

Waziri, an agricultural engineer, said he had realised that the commodity would be cheaper when imported by the ministry in collaboration with fertiliser suppliers.

"I realised that what we are buying at N40,000 per tonne could be purchased at not more than N30,000 per tonne after defraying all costs", he said.

Waziri explained that since the ministry knew the differential and where the commodity could be purchased, the ministry decided to "assist" the farmers.

He assured that the secretariat would also sell insecticide and herbicides to the farmers at affordable prices throughout the cropping season.

On his efforts to improve the capacity of workers in the agriculture secretariat, Waziri hinted that he had concluded arrangements to make them competent on information technology.

"Our minister was very happy with our plan. He approved the release of 12 computers and accessories to the secretariat for that purpose", he said.
