Dorothy Alli canvasses life sentence for child abuse
By Adeola Ogunlade

WIFE of Plateau State Administrator, Mrs. Dorothy Alli has advocated life imprisonment for those who engage in child abuse as a group blamed media for upsurge in prostitution.

Speaking with reporters in Jos, the state capital at the weekend, wife of the administrator said that cases of child abuse had assumed an alarming proportion and needed such a drastic action.

She urged the Federal Government to initiate stiffer laws to punish those who engage in child abuse, suggesting the education of parents on the need to reduce the number of children they produce as part of efforts to curtail the problem.

On increase in the number of people who indulge in prostitution, the founder and President of the United States-based Women Liberation Action Movement, Dr. May Brandecker, blamed the vice on pornographic films and other similar products shown and printed by media outfits.

Brandecker spoke at the public presentation of a book titled: Agony: The problem of Prostitution and Women Trafficking, written by one Israel Esabienlen in Lagos.

Represented by Isaac Echuagu, Brandecker also identified the poor economic condition in the country as a factor that lures people into prostitution.

On ways out of the menace, he said the media must appreciate the negative effects of pornography and show commitment to discouraging prostitution by doing away with such films and creating awareness of the dangers inherent in the vice.

He called on the government to better the lot of the people while the prostitutes should show greater value for their lives by shunning the ignoble act, no matter the problem they are facing or how poor they are.
