Akwa Ibom pays exam fees for SSS students
From Aniekan Bassey, Uyo
AS part of its efforts to ensure youth development, the Akwa Ibom State government has undertaken the payment of terminal examination fees of all students in the Senior Secondary School (SSS) in the state.
This gesture is besides the various scholarships and bursary awards to all categories of students in the state, especially in the areas of science, technology, medium and engineering.
The state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Antia Obong Ekong, stated this at the opening of Youth Skill Acquisition organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), "People in Art Initiative" at Eket and Uyo senatorial districts in the state. The workshop featured ways to develop micro-business enterprises.
He also hinted that government has designed transformative strategies, aimed at curbing economic difficulties and unemployment among youths in such programmes as full implementation of Universal Basic Education (UBE), computer literacy guidance and counselling centres in all schools.
The co-ordinator of the workshop and founder of the NGO, Miss Emem Nkereuwen, identified what she termed deliberate neglect and under-utilisation of the country's manpower as problems facing the youths today.
She commended Mobil Producing Nigeria for the sponsorship of the workshop as a way of finding solutions to the problems of youth development in the country.
Also, a representative of Mobil, Producing, Mr. Dick Ntia, commended the initiative of the organisers. He advised the youths to be self-reliant through the knowledge gained rather than clamouring for the elusive 'white collar' jobs and contracts, adding that Mobil's philosophy of empowerment was currently at capacity building.
