Harnessing cassava chips for export

SIR: In order to harness the potential of cassava, there is need to create multiple use for cassava root and tubers. These include the use of cassava tubers in livestock feeds, food manufacturing, starch, as an industrial raw material for beer and malt, cassava based alcohol/ethanol industry, textile industry, soft drink industry, paper mills, pharmaceuticals and petroleum drilling.

The proportion of cassava used as livestock feeds in Nigeria only increased after the ban placed on importation of maize, then local raw materials were used as a substitute for maize in animal feeds to provide the required carbohydrate. In Nigeria, livestock feeds with cassava producing the carbohydrate requirement still accounts for less than five per cent of the total cassava yield in Nigeria compared to other countries such as Brazil and Thailand with over 80 per cent of cassava yield.

Cassava chips is a major export commodity of Thailand. Nigeria too can sustain this export market due to its large cassava yield per annum.

Cassava chip is a product made from cassava. It is especially used as an ingredient in animal feeds. In this regard, the Federal Government has an existing export expansion programme in place that pays 40 per cent of the total proceeds from export repatriated. This is an area where cassava growers can improve their production and earn foreign exchange.
