7 feared dead in P-Harcourt mayhem

By John Ighodaro
Tuesday, August 24, 2004

PORT HARCOURT— ABOUT 50 houses were burnt down early yesterday in Port Harcourt and  about seven people feared dead when alleged cultists invaded the Njemanze Waterfront settlement in the city. The settlement of bachas and concrete buildings was emitting smoke from when Vanguard visited the place yesterday.

Broken bricks, concrete slabs and fragments of torn corrugated iron sheets littered the arena. There werebloodstains on the sand at the Nsukka/Njemanze Street junction where an alleged motorcyclist was saidto have been gunned down during the attack.

At the beginning of Njemanze Street, scores of distressed and displaced persons—victims of theattack who survived the invasion— were seen discussing in groups. Some were, however, busy carrying away such personal effects as mattresses, TV sets and fridges from the scene of devastation.

An eyewitness of the midnight attack told Vanguard that “the attack started at about 1a.m. The attackersused dynamites and we all woke up to the blasts of dynamites and gunshots. When I came out, I could seesmoke and fire faraway in Njemanze. After a little while, some of us went to the scene and we saw peoplerunning helter-skelter with some women carrying their babies in their arms. It was pathetic. By this time, the invaders had fled the area.”

A victim who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity said: “What you see me wearing is all that Ihave left. I was on night duty elsewhere. I came in this morning and I just discovered what happened. AllI have left is what I am putting on.”

Vanguard further gathered that some cultists who were said to have been expelled from the settlement by the resident vigilante group about a year ago were responsible for the killings and wantondestruction.
