AKURE— THE judicial Commission of Inquiry inaugurated by the Ondo state government to probe the N20b contracts awarded by the immediate past administration in the state yesterday began its sitting warning against nocturnal visit to members by past government officials and political appointees in a bid to influence their findings.
Chairman of the Commission, Justice Williams Akintoroye however declared that the Commission would be independent, fair and open to all. Speaking at the inaugural sitting of the commission in Akure Justice Akintoroye said, “We want to assure you all, the stakeholders in particular that this commission will be independent and fair to all.
“We are not here to witch- hunt or vilify anyone, we are here to inquire into the activities of the last administration with a view to finding out the truth and nothing but the truth.
“This is why we want to declare our stand here this morning that this commission will not welcome any form of inducement, threat, promise or what have you. We will not yield to blackmail, or intimidation, we also want to advise against all forms of illegal contact, be it direct or indirect.
“Do not send or be sent to us at all, with respect to this assignment whoever breaks these or any of these rules would be taken as a man with a skeleton in his cupboard.
“Any attempt to induce or stampede us would be seen as a sign or evidence of having a bad case.
The commission is expected to look into four major contracts awarded by the Chief Adebayo Adefarati past administration.
They include, the N17B Igbokoda –– Aiyetoro road contract awarded to J & P Nigeria Limited, the N466m riverine electrification project awarded to Messrs Karserve Limited of Plot 285, Akin Olugbade street Victoria Island Lagos, and the N206m new stadium complex consultancy contract awarded to Messrs Gonent Consortium Nigeria Limited of 250 Ikorodu road Obanikoro, Lagos.
Also, they are to look into the circumstances surrounding the expenditure of N560m public fund between April 2002 and May 2003 without budgetary provision and unclear purposes.
