Militarymen invade Shogunle police post

By Albert Akpor & Abigail Arikawe
Tuesday, August 24, 2004

LAGOS— PANDEMONIUM broke out Weekend at Shogunle Police Post Lagos after persons suspected to be Military officers invaded the Post, shot and wounded several policemen including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) on duty.

The cause of the attack could not be easily ascertained but police sources said the men, three of them in Military camouflage and the other two in mufti stormed the post in an unmarked Lagos commercial coloured bus at past 8.00pm and started shooting sporadically during which the ASP was hit in his left thigh and he immediately slumped in a pool of his blood.  He was reported to have been rushed to an undisclosed medical center in the area for prompt attention.

The group it was gathered later entered their bus gently and drove away without removing anything from the Post. Lagos state police public relations officer Mr. Emmanuel Ighodalo could not be reached for comments over the attack as he was said to be out on official assignment.

However, a source at the Oshodi Division who described the attack as shocking said four empty shells of 7.62 calibre ammunition were recovered as exhibit after the operation which lasted about 45 minutes. According to sources, “the incident occurred at about 20.15hrs and every officer on duty was surprised when we suddenly saw five men, some in military uniform with others in camouflage stormed the post and started shooting anyhow. We all had to take cover because we were taken unaware; but SUPOL Mathew Obi received shot in his left thigh in the process. After the men left we recovered four empty shell of 7.62 calibre of ammunition as exhibit deposited at the post.”
