Oil lawsuit threatens Nigeria, Traditional Rulers warn

By Osaro Okhomina
Tuesday, August 24, 2004

WARRI — Traditional  Rulers of Oil Minerals Producing Communities of Nigeria (TROMPCON) warned yesterday that the decision of the 19 Northern States and three states from the South-West to ask the Supreme Court to void the Act abrogating the Onshore- Offshore oil dichotomy may cause violent revolt that could threaten the corporate existence of the country, if not withdrawn from the court in the next few days.

Also, students and youth groups in Delta State have declared their readiness to cripple the socio-economic activities of the country, warning that they will go on rampage if the conspiracy of the 22 states against the littoral states is heard by the apex court.

Rising from its national executive council meeting in Warri, Chairman of the Traditional Rulers of Oil Mineral Producing States (TROMPCON), His Royal Majesty, Pere Charles Ayemi- Botu warned that if the oil lawsuit is not withdrawn, it is capable of threatening the corporate existence of the country, as forces are gathering for a violent rejection of such dishonour on the region.

In a 10-point resolution, the traditional rulers said “we condemn in very strong terms the action of the governors in instituting the lawsuit against the federal government on the abolition act. Such action is capable of threatening the corporate existence of the country. We are worried and in shock at this suit. We have been working day and night to avert the likely violent reaction that could have trailed this unpatriotic act. We call on our colleagues and leaders in the northern parts and the South-West, as well as other well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on these governors to withdraw the suit, if they are seen to wish the country well."

Meanwhile, students of Delta State in higher institutions of learning yesterday declared their readiness to mobilize and go on rampage against the perceived conspiracy by the 22 states to subvert the rights of the people of the littoral states.

In a statement in Warri, the Delta State Students Solidarity Movement (DSSM) warned that in the event that the Northern States insist on carrying through their threat to the Act abolishing Dichotomy, “we will mobilize to the fullest and go on rampage all over the country because we believe it is high time we students and youths from the region reject this insult and struggle for the emancipation of the masses to reduce the level of grassroots suffering.”
