My success secret
My success secret -Odili
TONY ITA ETIM, Port
Harcourt
GOVERNOR
Peter Odili of Rivers State has spoken on the secret behind his administration’s
success so far, attributing it to team work.
He said the rapport between the
executive, legislative and judicial arms of government was the elixir that had
oiled his administration’s wheel of progress in the last five years.
The governor disclosed these to
participants of the Integrated Research Group Five of the Senior Executive
Course 26 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS),
Kuru, near Jos, Plateau State who visited him in Port Harcourt, weekend.
He said democracy cannot survive
without relevant team work by all organs of government.
According to him Rivers State has
produced a crop of young men and women who feel a sense of commitment and
determination to make the necessary sacrifices to change things for the better
in the interest of the society.
The friction and difficulties
that existed in the process of re-establishing democracy in Nigeria, he pointed
out, is that most of those in government today had not been in government
before, so a lot of learning was still going on in most places.
He added that the experimentation
under the leadership of President Olusegun Obasanjo is perhaps a new beginning
at learning to be democratic.
Describing the studies of the
institute as crucial for the survival of the nation, Gov. Odili commended NIPSS
for the calibre of people that are being turned out yearly from its programme,
adding that with this development, the future holds brighter prospects for
Nigeria.
Leader of the delegation and Vice
President, Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Okey Onwuaso-Igwe had earlier
intimated the governor that they were on a fact-finding mission to the state on
how to develop policy issues, especially on a harmonious executive and
legislative relationship in Nigeria.
Dr. Onwuaso-Igwe added that this
was the problem in the country during the first four years of the current
democratic experiment and explained that their mission was to find ways of
making that relationship better, so as to build stronger nation.
He said that the position Gov.
Odili has placed Rivers State is a good test case for the study in executive -
legislative relationship, including the governor’s role in resolving the
impasse between the National Assembly and the Presidency.
Onwuaso-Igwe described Gov. Odili
as a man with tremendous experience in governance and policies, whose sterling
leadership style has placed him high in the list of those considered by the
course participants for the interview and interaction with the institute.
