Rampaging robbers kill 3 cops
CAJETAN
MMUTA, Asaba
HAZARD
of duty took a heavy toll on Delta State police command last week with three of
its officers including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) falling to
the rapid fire of dare-devil armed robbers.
The period appeared to mark an
upsurge in robbery and especially pre-meditated killing of policemen.
Like the ASP, an inspector and a
constable who were also murdered during the past week had their identities
shielded from the public until procedural requirements are satisfied.
State Police Commissioner, Mr.
Charles Akaya, who spoke yesterday at the command headquarters in Asaba on the
killings, said the ASP was shot dead by a gang of unidentified gunmen who
swooped on police officers on duty about 4.45 a.m. at Ovie Palace Road, Efurum
near Warri on Friday, August 13.
The same gang, he said, was
believed to have struck earlier at Efurum where it stormed and seized an Asaba-bound
commercial bus. A police constable who was among the passengers was singled out
and killed.
As if synchronised, another group
of bandits attacked a police patrol vehicle at Otovwode on Port Harcourt-Warri
expressway junction, Ughelli, killed an Inspector on duty and torched the patrol
vehicle.
In spite of the losses, the
commissioner declared the resolve of the command to intensify the ongoing
onslaught on robbers and other criminal elements in the state, saying there will
not be a safe haven for criminals in his domain.
Mr. Akaya urged the public to
volunteer information on criminals, assuring that strict confidentiality will be
accorded such tips.
He warned, however, that those
who are shielding armed robbers would suffer the same fate when caught.
"These unwarranted attacks will no more be
tolerated and we therefore, call on those who harbour these criminals to beware
because they shall suffer the same fate with the criminals. For the avoidance of
doubt we shall now return fire-for-fire," he added.
