INEC receives recall petition against Abia Rep The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced the receipt of a petition seeking the recall of a member of the House of Representatives from Ukwa East/Ukwa West federal constituency of Abia State, Mr. Chinoyerem Macebuh. A statement signed by the commission’s director of public affairs, Mr. Steve Osemeke, made available to Daily Trust in Abuja yesterday, said INEC received the petition yesterday from people claiming to be members of Macebuh’s constituency. “The petitioners, who claimed to be representing more than one-half of the registered voters in the constituency, declared that they have lost confidence in the ability of Hon. Macebuh to represent them,” the statement said. Quoting section 69 of the constitution, the statement indicated that the receipt of the petition would be followed by a referendum on whether or not the lawmaker should be stripped of his position. Section 69 of the constitution says that a member of the National Assembly could be recalled when “(a) there is presented to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a petition on that behalf signed by more than one-half of the persons alleging their loss of confidence in that member; and (b) the petition is thereafter, in a referendum conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), within 90 days of the date of receipt of the petition, approved by a simple majority of the votes of the persons registered to vote in that member’s constituency.” TO NEXT NEWS PAGE ...
