North Central States Alert FG on Flooding From Jide Orintunsin in Minna Niger, Kogi, Kwara and Kebbi States have alerted the Federal Government of possible flooding of communities along the plains of Rivers, Niger and Kaduna any moment from now. They also expressed their wish to have an input in the proposed Niger River Development Commission bill by President Olusegun Obasanjo. Rising from a technical committee meeting of the affected states, secretaries to the governments of the states (SSG) in Minna weekend, alerted the federal government that in a couple of weeks communities up and down the stream of the nations three hydro-electric power stations will suffer from flooding. Speaking on behalf of the committee, Chairman and Niger State SSG, Comrade Adams Erena said the "next few weeks will be most critical for us, during which time the flood will be high, following release of water by the three dams, thereby risking our property and houses to flood". The affected states have over the last four years championed a bill on Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) to take care of the plight of over five hundred communities that are annually submerged by flood, as a result of release of waters by the Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro dams. Sources at the National Assembly revealed that the bill, which was passed by the two chambers however suffered, when President Obasanjo came up with another proposal.
