National Open Varsity Gets Council By Bayo Adeleke A Fifteen-member governing council has been appointed for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). The councils, with Professor Njida Gadzama as its Chairman, according to the institution's Vice-chancellor, Professor Olubunmi Jegede has other members from the six geo-political zone. Briefing journalists in Lagos yesterday, on the institution's "Jounrney So Far", Jegede said with the governing council in place, the university is now "legally covered to undertake matters relating to academic, research, and development, the purpose for the establishment of the institution," adding that the university has offered admission to 32,000 students in the country." Stating that the university was established to cater for those who are disenfranchised and marginalised by conventional universities, the vice-chancellor attributed the delay in the registration of students to difficulties in sorting out admission letters, inability of students to understand registration procedure, part payment of fees rather that full payment by students. Based on this, Jegede expressed that the institution has made available on-line registration to ease the problems encountered by the students. Other reason why the advertisement for new in-takes has been put on hold' according to him was because of some fraudulent agencies in Aba, Asaba, Lagos and Abuja which were collecting money from students on behalf of the university. As a result of this, Jegede has warned students that the institution has not warranted anybody to collect money on its behalf.
