FG Grants 14 Licences for Recharge Card Production From Cletus Akwaya in Abuja The Federal Government yesterday granted licenses to 14 companies to locally produce recharge cards for telephone operators in the country. The approval is sequel to a ban placed in May, on importation of recharge cards by President Olusegun Obasanjo with effect from January 1, 2005. In a statement last night, the telecommunication sector regulator, the National Communications Commission (NCC) named the lucky winners of the recharge cards production permits as Security and Allied Solutions; Masterstroke; Airtel Limited; Nitecrest Limited; Cards Technology Limited; Namitech West Africa Ltd.; and SNECOUGroup of Companies. Others include South Beach Company Ltd; Control Cards Ltd.; Advantel Limited; Premium Ideas Limited ; Hemmung Investment Ltd.; Alfa Juliet Mangla Ltd. and ORGA Ltd. In issuing the permits, NCC said "the award of contract for the printing of recharge cards to any of the approved companies is entirely a business matter between the operating companies and the manufacturing companies." Noting that the business of recharge card production was not a "free -for -all process," the NCC said government was aware that if left uncontrolled, "the nefarious actions of unscrupulous elements may thwart the good intentions of government."
