Okija: Police Urged to Uncover Other Shrines

Imo Progressive Union (IPU), has advised the Inspector-General of Police, Tafa Balogun, to beam his searchlight on other communities to expose more shrines involved in ritual killings.

The union Chairman, Charles Ebere, said it will be an error for Police to limit its search to the Okija shrines in Anambra State, because many of such enclaves exist all over Nigeria, and urged Balogun to summon up courage and make public, the names of those linked to the shrine.

"Publication of the names of the shrines' patrons in newspapers will expose their identities and serve as deterrent to others. The Inspector-General should also comb other areas," Ebere advised.

According to him, only publication of those behind the devilish acts could absolve Igbo indigenes that earn their daily bread through legitimate means. He commended the police on the ground breaking investigation which led to the uncovering of the dastardly acts.

This came on the heels of a similar one from a rights group, Campaign for Human Dignity, which hailed the police over the handling of the Okija shrine in which several skulls and decomposing human bodies have been discovered. The groups through its coordinator, John Okpara, described as unfortunate, the discovery of the shrines in modern day Nigeria.

According to him, promoters of such enterprise are enemies of the country whose sole aim is to tarnish the image of Nigeria in the international community. He wondered why people, in total disregard for the constitution become a law unto themselves. According to him "the laws are there and the courts are there for the aggrieved to seek justice. It is barbaric that in the 21st century, people could behave as if we are in the stone age era. How can people be taken to the shrine for jungle justice?"
