We Didn't Visit Okija Shrine - Lawmakers
Anambra
From Charles Onyekamuo in Awka

Majority Leader of Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Humphrey Nsofor, has denied earlier media reports that members of the State House of Assembly visited the shrines of Ogwugwu deity in Okija, Ihiala Council Area to swear to an oath of allegiance to the self professed godfather of Anambra Politics, Chief Chris Uba, prior to their election into the State Assembly.

Rather, Nsofor said the shrine was brought to them in one of their meetings at the guest house of the godfather at Udoka Housing Estate in Awka by Chief Chuma Nzeribe and one of his kinsmen, Chief Benson Nwawulu, who made the initial suggestion of swearing at the shrine while all the prospective candidates for the state Assembly were called upon to go to one of the priests of Ogwugwu deity brought by Nzeribe and who was kept in one of the rooms in Uba's guest house to swear individually and pledge their allegiance. He said he personally resisted the move as a Christian and counselled for prayers.

But the majority leader who briefed newsmen at the Iyiago legislative quarters on what he called "clarifications on the Okija shrines", however said if some of the lawmakers finally took oath of allegiance before the shrines, it may be when Uba diverted the venue of their normal meetings which used to hold at his guest house in Awka to his Enugu residence where he was no longer invited because of his opposition to the administration of oath by the shrine priest.

This opposition, he said, earned him non recognition by Uba, who, after questioning his audacity, sidelined him and no longer invites him to cancus meetings in his Enugu home.

He also said he wouldn't know if the lawmakers later took oath to be paying Chief Uba 70 per cent of their salaries for one year to assist offset Uba's campaign expenses on them.
