Plans to Boost Agric Production Under Way Borno From Andy Ekugo in Abuja Borno State government said it has put in place agricultural development programmes aimed at increasing the annual growth rate of the sector to 7.5 per cent from its current 4.5 per cent. A statement by the state Director of Press, Usman Ali Chiroma, made available to THISDAY in Abuja, said Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, in his resolve to turn around agriculture in the state has resuscitated the abandoned Yau Irrigation Scheme, established in 1959, with N1.3 million, which has provided water for hectares of farmlands in the state. Other irrigation projects, according to the statement, include those in Daya, Abadam, Alau, Jerikol, Kwaya Kusar and Bayo, which resulted in increased yield. The scheme has "brought thousands of hectares of dry but arable land flourishing, yielding tonnes of rice, wheat, maize, vegetables and potatoes. Thousands of Borno indigenes who migrated to Niger Republic in search of fertile land have come back to farm in the state," the statement said. With a population growth of 2.8 per cent, the state government budgeted N1.5 billion for the agricultural sector, out of which livestock pest control vaccines like Contagious Bovine Pleuro Pneumonia (CBPP), Renderpest and African Swine Fever were provided in large quantities for the livestock sector of the state. Also, the first ever veterinary hospital was established in the state by Governor Sheriff.
