Police to Pay N.15m Damages
Lagos
By Abimbola Akosile

A Federal High Court, holden in Lagos and presided over by Justice M. Awokulehin, has awarded N150,000 against two officers of the Nigerian Police Force, as exemplary and aggravated damages for the unlawful and unconstitutional arrest and detention of a businessman, Alhaji Ibrahim Hamay, in a matter involving transfer of funds.

Justice Awokulehin, granting the applicant's prayer, also ordered that Attorney-General of the Federation (1st respondent) Inspector-General of Police (2nd), DIG, Force CID, Alagbon (3rd), and City Express Bank (4th) should charge Hamay to a court or release him from detention unconditionally.

Hamay, in his prayer and motion-on-notice brought under Section 46(3) of 1999 Constitution, had claimed 2nd and 3rd respondents had arrested him on March 15th without any warrant of arrest, thereby violating his fundamental human rights.
