Okija Raid Has Positive Political Implications, Says Ojikutu
By Tokunbo Adedoja

Former Deputy Governor of Lagos State and chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Alhaja Sinatu Ojikutu has said the recent raid on Okija shrine in Anambra state by a detachment of the Nigerian Police Force has positive political implications for the country.

In a chat with our reporter, the former deputy governor also advised that similar raids should be extended to other states of the federation where such notorious shrines exist.

Commenting on the implications that such a raid has on the nation's democracy, Ojikutu said revelations from Okija has shown that several politicians had at one time or the other patronised the shrine to take oath to be loyal to their godfathers.

She added that the implication of such oath taken at the shrine is that instead of being committed to the electorate that gave them the mandate to be in power, they would be committed to their political godfathers, whom they swore to serve.

Speaking further, she said that was why, several years after the return of democracy, the much-talked-about dividend of democracy still remains a mirage. She added that while the elelctorate wallow in abject poverty, pockets of political godfathers across the nation continue to live in opulence at the expense of the masses. She noted that there is no state where politicians are not subjected to similar oath-taking in order to secure elective offices by political godfathers but added that there might only be some modifications in the way and manner such oaths are administered.

"Okija is just one out of a thousand cases. Similar practices occur in other states. Political aspirants are still being subjected to oath taking by political godfathers. Instead of the type of oath stipulated by the constitution which demands loyalty to the state and commitment to the people, oath taken at the various shrines demand absolute loyalty to godfathers at the expense of the people", she said.

The PDP chieftain added that until such barbaric practices are checked across the country, credible politicians that will be willing to give selfless service to the people would not be allowed to emerge as their aspirations would continue to be frustrated by political godfathers.
