Athens 2004: US Women Reach Final The United States beat world champions Germany 2-1 in a fierce struggle on yesterday to reach the final of the Olympic women's soccer tournament. Substitute Heather O'Reilly swept home the winner nine minutes into extra time on the Greek island of Crete, sending the Americans into the final of the Athens Games. The powerful U.S. team, who were runners-up to Norway in Sydney four years ago, will face Brazil , who beat Sweden 1-0, in the Olympic final on Thursday. Veteran midfielder Kristine Lilly struck first for the Americans in the 33rd minute, driving home a left-foot shot after a clever lay-off from Abby Wambach. The resilient Germans snatched a dramatic equaliser two minutes into injury time. Substitute Isabell Bachor cut inside from the left to beat goalkeeper Briana Scurry with a fierce right-foot shot that took a wicked deflection off Joy Fawcett.
