In a bid to ensure adequate and widespread fuel distribution in Nigeria, major fuel marketer Oando Plc, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nigerian railway Corporation, to haul petroleum products from its sidings to the northern parts of the country by rail.
In a statement issued by Miss Tokunboh Durosaro, Oando's Head of Corporate Communications, the oil company, under the term of the MOU, is to provide a sum of about N100million to NRC in three phases for refurbishing the adequate number of locomotives and wagons required to provide the haulage services to Oando.
Altogether, accroding to Durosaro, five locomotives and a total of 120 tank wagons are to be refurbished by the Railway corporation for Oando's use.
The haulage schedule has been broken down into three phases for logistic purpose. These include phase 1, expected to commence this month (August) where NRC will deploy two sets of liners made up of 2 locomotive engines plus 20 wagon each a total of 40 tank wagons.
While in phase 2, to commence by the end of september that would involve the deployment of 2 additional complete sets of liners, locomotive engine plus 40 wagons as well as, phase 3 to commence in october and would involve an additional one locomotive engine and 40 other train wagons.
The company stated that all wagons would be branded in Oando logo and colours and will move petroleum products to the northern part of the country to alleviate the incessant shortages of petroleum products often experienced by those parts.
With each wagon carting about 33,000 litres of product, each train of 13 wagons would haul about 430,000 litres per trip, the schedule operating on full stream is expected to enable Oando move millions as much as 1.7m litres of products weekly.
According to Mr. Wale Tinubu, Managing Director of Oando Plc, "This is yet an obvious display of our firm commitment to the availability of petroleum products in every part of the country and to show our full support for Government's deregulation programme. With this efficient, cheaper and safer initiative, our customers in the north will certainly have a cause to smile soon".
