OPEC Fund Extends $.2m Aid to Sudan By Gloria Achoyamen The Opec Fund for International Development has extended an emergency assistance grant of US$200,000 to procure urgently needed supplies and support relief efforts to help refugees who have been forced to leave their home as the armed conflict that has erupted in the Darfur region of Western Sudan. The Darfur crisis has resulted in almost 1.3 million displaced people, 80,000 of whom have fled t neighboring challenges posed by this critical situation are daunting, drinking water is scarce, the means for delivering supplies refugees inadequate and concern ices growing over rising malnutrition rates and the incidence of water borne ill infectious diseases. the grant will bee used to assist emergency operations in both Chad and the Sudan. In cooperation with the government of Chad, the Red Cross Society of Chad, the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees is currently setting up camps in Trejine and Kahumi, Chad, accommodate around 42, 000 people. Assistance will be provided in the areas of basic health, water and sanity community services, as well ass food supplies and essential relief goods, which will be delivered via air transport.
