Archibuilt 2004 Promises International Status Building Materials By Bennett Oghifo Exhibitors from Europe and Asia are expected to grace this year's Archibuilt, an annual specialised forum of building materials and technologies exhibition staged by the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA). Presenting the fine points of Archibuilt 2004, the Chairman, Organising Committee, Architect Patience Okonta, said firms from South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Dubai, China, India and Singapore have been contacted to participate in the exposition. "Archibuilt 2004 shall bring a new dimension to exhibitions and trade fairs in Nigeria...it shall be the fore-runner for a big African exhibition during the African Union of Architects 25th Anniversary Conference and Celebrations holding in Abuja in May 2005," said Arc. Okonta. She said the theme of this year's Archibuilt is "Urban Regeneration" and that it would hold at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, from October 3 to 10, 2004. Last year's event took place at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, and this year's is taking place in Abuja again because "Abuja is the bedrock of the construction industry in Nigeria and continues to be the leading market for building materials and construction technology in the West African sub region" The theme, Okonta said, fits Abuja because of the regeneration taking place in the city. "The founding fathers obviously had a vision of a city of global delight....However, the development of the city somewhere down the line started to deviate from the prescription of its master plan....We recognize and admire the efforts being made to restore the city to sanity such that it would not be destroyed by the very same urbanisation process which brought it into existence". She said there would be three days of seminar, which would examine the urbanisation process within the context of Abuja and other Nigerian great cities. "Deliberations shall set a criteria for evaluating our urban centers and postulate new kite marks to upgrade our cities to international standards.
