2007:
IBB’s posters flood C/River
By

Correspondent, Calabar
As campaigns towards the 2007 general elections gather
momentum, poster of the former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim
Babangida, who is believed to be one of the strong contenders for the office of
President, have flooded the nooks and crannies of Cross River State and
Calabar, the state capital.
The posters are appearing on the heels of the launching of
the campaign committees of Project 2007, Babangida’s presidential campaign
group, in the three senatorial districts of the state.
No individual or group, even Project 2007, has claimed
responsibility for the appearance of the posters in the streets of Calabar and
other parts of the state.
Apart from Project 2007, another group, ‘The
Eagle’, is also rooting for the former military president.
The State Coordinator of Project 2007 in the state, Mr. Nte
Basiekanem, told journalists in the state recently that IBB’s second
coming would be for the good of Nigerians.
Basiekanem said that at the moment, the Project 2007 was
saddled with the responsibility of securing Cross River for the former Nigerian
leader in the primary and secondary elections.
Babangida is a member of the People’s Democratic Party
(PDP) and he is expected to square up with Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and
retired Brigadier-General Buba Marwa and others for the presidential ticket of
the PDP.
The chance of Babangida in Cross River, from available
indications, lies with the direction the power brokers in the state swing.
The PDP in Cross River State is currently divided between
supporters of the former military president and those of Vice President
Abubakar. However, the protagonists of the IBB project have been seen and heard
more in the state than the followers of other aspirants.
