Shake-up
fever grips Imo Sports Council
By Tasie Theodore

Tension has gripped the Imo Sports
Council following indications of an impending shake-up of the organisation by
the state government.
As a result,
lobbying is currently going on with senior officials canvassing for new
positions while others pray to retain theirs. Polarisation, which has been
identified in the council over the years has been re-invigorated by the powers
that be in order to sustain the power play. With the returning of former
Secretary/Head of Administration in the Imo state Sports Council, Mrs Beatrice
Okpara, some senior officials are jittery as she is said to now be in charge of
coaching as "Deputy Director of Sports after acquiring a masters degree in
Physical and Health Education.
Mrs Okpara has
become a threat to all others who have poor academic qualification. To this
end, they have resorted to godfatherism in order to retain their positions.
Investigations revealed that a new office is being renovated for Mrs Okpara
described as "Iron lady" who has represented Nigeria in the past at the
Commonwealth, Olympic games and other major international events.
When Daily Independent called at the
office of the Acting Director of sports, workers in his office declined
comments pointing out that the Acting Director of Sports, Chief Goddy Agbarakwe
is in Athens for the on-going Olympics.
