Enahoro, others insist on confab
By Clifford Ndujihe

THE Chief Anthony Enahoro-led Nigerians United for Democracy (NUD) will embark on the last leg of realising the quest for convocation of a Sovereign National Conference (SNC) on Friday.

Leaders of the group, including Enahoro, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Chiefs Chekwas Okorie and Maxi Okwu will converge in Lagos to meet with leaders of the Patriots, Afenifere, Ohanaeze, Yoruba Council of Elders (FCE), Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Ndigbo, among others on the issue.

The meeting is a follow-up to letters, earlier despatched to 50 pro-SNC groups last month.

Making the disclosure in a telephone chat with The Guardian, Okwu, the group's secretary said the meeting was part of preparations that will usher in a three-day conference of all pro-SNC groups in October.

According to him, October 5 has been fixed as a tentative date for the all-inclusive gathering that would map out modalities for convening the National Confab.

To ensure that the group's work in unity, Okwu said the leaders have put behind them the recent disagreements that threatened their aspiration.

A crevice had developed on the NUD's wall late in June this year following the demand by a section of the group that a new leadership should be elected before the conference and that President Olusegun Obasanjo should resign to pave way for the SNC.

Mid-way into the crisis, leaders of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) re-grouped to amplify the work of the NUD and harmonise the issues.

Okwu said there was no more division in the NUD. "We have one team led by Chief Anthony Enahoro," he stated, adding that nothing would stop the NUD from realising its "noble" objectives.
