Speaking at the occasion, the outgoing Belgium Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Jozef Smets, explained that the idea of giving award to a few prominent Nigerians with a special Belgian royal distinction as a honour began last year. He said the role played by the Ooni of Ife in ensuring a stable polity in Nigerian could not be overemphasised. Smets noted that as an ambassador in Nigeria since 2000, he had followed the role of the Ooni of Ife, not only in his capacity of the "incarnation" of the Yoruba tradition but also as a prominent national leader. He said each time there was tension in the country "or the relations between the different geo-political zones of Nigeria were under stress, the Ooni went into swift action.
