Probe of varsities begins
From Iyabo Sotunde, Ibadan
TO ensure accountability and probity in the nation's tertiary institutions, the Federal Government has begun a probe of activities in federal universities.
Already, a presidential visitation panel saddled with the job began sitting at the University of Ibadan (UI) yesterday and to end on Wednesday, September 22.
The panel, it was learnt, is to check the records of the institution in respect of financial management, curriculum and staff development between 1999 and 2003.
The panel would also check the records of the university research programmes and the general conditions of learning and make recommendations necessary for the university to effectively achieve their objectives.
It is also expected to look into the leadership quality of the federal universities in terms of the roles of governing councils, the vice-chancellors and other principal officers of the institutions.
The panel is also to determine the relationship between the universities and the various statutory bodies it interacts with in accordance with the law.
The Guardian learnt that the panel would focus on the application of funds, particularly the special grants and loans meant for specific projects in order to determine the status of such institutions.
In a statement, the secretary to the panel, Dr. G. A. E. Makogu, told members of the UI community they should submit memoranda on any of the terms of reference.
Makogu further stated that members of the university community wishing to give oral evidence would to be received between Thursday September 2, and Friday September 10.
Other members of the panel are Alhaji Abubakar Gimba, chairman; Prof. Dibo Adejuwom, Prof. Julius Ona and Dr. Musa Usman.
