    Dariye, in Abuja, meets Obasanjo

    LERE OJEDOKUN, Abuja

SUSPENDED governor of Plateau State, Chief Joshua Dariye was yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja where he and President Olusegun Obasanjo held closed doors discussions on the peace process in the state.

The meeting was said to be a follow-up to last week’s two-day assessment visit of the President to the state which was engulfed in ethno-sectarian religious crisis last May.

The crisis in Yelwa-Shendam led to the imposition of a state of emergency and subsequent suspension of the governor, his deputy and state House of Assembly by President Obasanjo last May 18.

Maj. Gen. Chris Alli (rtd) was subsequently appointed the Administrator, pending the lifting of the six-month emergency rule.

Chief Dariye arrived at the Villa at about 4.30 pm in a private Mercedes Benz executive saloon car, accompanied by a plain-clothes security detail.

On arrival, he headed straight to the office of the Chief of Staff (COS), Maj. Gen. Abdullahi Mohammed (rtd) where he waited for some time before proceeding to see the president.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Mrs Oluremi Oyo confirmed the meeting which she said bordered majority on the return of peace to the state.

She expressed the President’s desire to see peace and stability reign nationwide even as she declined comment on whether or not the discussions touched on the return of the governor.

"I can’t answer that question. The president was asked that same question during the media chat (last Sunday) and his answer was plain and simple: we have just reached the mid term and that he will be back again. What the President is concerned is that there would be peace and stability, security and progress all over the country," Mrs Oyo said.
